COLLEGE VISITS
During the period of Distance Learning, colleges and universities are being creative and offering many ways to learn about their school, such as virtual tours, daily information sessions, one-on-one virtual meetings, etc. You should schedule these around mid-June. Check the admissions pages on the school websites for details.
CAREER EXPLORATION
There are many great resources on the Irondale Career & College website. Naviance also has a Career section where you can take assessments and explore careers including hundreds of RoadTrip Nation Interviews which are videos from people in all different kinds of fields sharing their experiences.
APPLYING FOR COLLEGES
- STEP ONE: COMPLETING APPLICATIONS
- You should finalize your list of three to five options for college by August 1.
- Check the application requirements on each specific college/university website to see what kind of application platforms they accept and all other requirements such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, test scores, etc.
- Applications - Directly on their website (school specific), Common Application
- Tutorial for Common App
TYPES OF APPLICATIONS:
- NOVEMBER 1: EARLY DECISION - LEGALLY BINDING
Early Decision is LEGALLY BINDING. This means if accepted, you must enroll. Students receive a decision by mid-December. You can submit only ONE early application. If you are accepted Early Decision, you MUST withdraw any applications to other schools. - NOVEMBER 1 AND MARCH 1: EARLY ACTION I & II
Early Action is a NON-BINDING early round application. Early Action I generally has a November deadline (school’s decision by mid-December) Early Action II usually carries a January deadline, with applicants hearing back 4-8 weeks later. - NOVEMBER 1: RESTRICTIVE EARLY ACTION
Non Binding. You can apply to ONLY ONE college this way during early rounds. This indicates to a school they are your number one choice and can significantly increase your chances of acceptance. You will have until MAY 1 to make your FINAL decision. - JANUARY 1 & FEBRUARY 1: REGULAR DECISION
Depending on the school. NOT EARLY OR BINDING. You are compared to a larger pool of applicants. - ROLLING APPLICATION - UPON RECEIPT
These schools don’t have a set deadline, although you will need to apply several weeks before the start of the term you’re interested in attending.
TEACHER LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
- VERY IMPORTANT - You should first ASK your teacher in person if at all possible. During COVID19, that may look more like a personal email to a teacher versus the teacher receiving a request directly from Naviance.
- Ask teachers early for recommendations! August and September is a great time to begin as early action and decision applications are DUE November 1.
- Ask one to three teachers as most colleges do not want more than that.
- DO have teachers complete a general letter. One that is non-college specific.
- DO request teachers for specific schools. If you select ALL colleges, Naviance will send the first letter uploaded.
- ONLY Mounds View School District teachers can be invited through Naviance.
- DO write college application essays in AUGUST. Some schools will require them.
- There are two types of letters that are important to show colleges you are well rounded: One that emphasizes your academic skills and another through Common App which is more about your character and should be submitted by someone like a coach, faith sponsor, etc.
WHAT IS FERPA AND WHY SHOULD I WAIVE IT?
- Waiving your FERPA rights lets colleges know that you do not intend to read your recommendations, which helps reassure colleges that the letters are unbiased, candid, and truthful.
- Some recommenders may decline to write a letter for you if you do not waive your rights. Check with your dean or teachers to see if any of them follow such a policy.
- Naviance is used to manage the supplemental materials needed for college applications, i.e. transcripts, school report, and letters of recommendation. It is NOT where you apply for colleges.
- Naviance tutorial can be found at this link.
- DO NOT enter any transcript requests or letters of recommendation until AFTER AUGUST 1 There is a yearly rollover and anything entered before that date will not be included when delivering your supporting documents - including letters of recommendation.
- User Id for login is the student's school email address. New password requirements were set up this past winter. If a student does not recall their password (FORMERLY student id), click on Forgot Password and you will be redirected to set up a new password.
- When entering schools into Naviance you will be asked how you plan to submit your application. At this time, Naviance only lists Common App and Direct to Institution. Choose Direct for all applications except for Common App. There should be no “?” icons under Submission Type on the ‘Colleges I’m Applying To’ page.
- NEW for school year 2020-2021, all requests will be through Naviance. A google form will be sent mid-August so you can alert me when you are ready to send your supporting documents.
- NEW There is now a single sign on option. When you are in your google mail, use the app grid and scroll down until you see the “N” in teal. Click on the N and it will take you directly to Naviance. Once you have it set up, you will not need to login separately.
